Gailey looking to even out his offense in 2012

Head Coach Chan Gailey hopes to limit his quarterback’s throws this season unlike last when Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a career high 596 passes to only 391 rushes.  This was mostly due to injury to starting back Fred Jackson who suffered a fractured fibula in week 11.  Jackson was replaced by C.J. Spiller to finish out the season.   Now with both Spiller and Jackson healthy again, look Gailey to split time between the two backs.

“You don’t want to do too much when they’re both in there because if you lose one of them (to injury) then all of a sudden you’re without a big part of your package,” Gailey said. “You’re trying to construct enough to create problems for the defense but not so much that you’re relying totally on having both of them at the same time. That’s a fine line that you walk creating offenses to be able to take advantage of both good players.”

New Defensive Coordinator Dave Wannstedt will be changing up their defense to a 4-3 scheme this season after only 2 seasons utilizing the 3-4.  Veteran LB Nick Barnett, who will switch to OLB, is looking forward to the teams defensive prowess.

“I think we can be as good as the best defense in the NFL if we do what we’re supposed to do,” Barnett said. “I definitely think we have that potential. We’ve got great pass rushers. We’ve got great interior linemen. We’ve got young hungry linebackers. I’m getting a little long in the tooth but I still consider myself young and we’ve got some young DBs. I don’t know if you guys are watching but they look pretty good. We have a lot of potential to be one of the best defenses in the NFL.”

As excited as RB C.J. Spiller and company are about the team, the young back knows you have to execute week in and week out or it doesn’t matter what you look like on paper.

“There is a big buzz around town. This town deserves it,” Spiller said. “We haven’t been good lately but at the end of the day we look good on paper. We’ve still got to go out on Sundays and get the job done. It’s not going to be overnight. We’ve still got to continue to push the envelope towards the goal we’re trying to accomplish.”
