Buffalo Bills – The Team

The Buffalo Bills were a charter member of the American Football Association, joining the NFL when the two leagues merged. They are the only team in the league to have won four consecutive AFC Championships and are also the only ones to move onto four consecutive Super Bowls, losing each.

Although one of three teams based in New York, the Bills are the only team that actually plays their home games in the state, with both the Jets and the Giants playing their home games in New Jersey. The Bills are also the only team that plays home games in Canada. One home game each year is held in Toronto as a result of a five year deal called the “Bills Toronto Series.”

The home of the Buffalo Bills is Ralph Wilson Stadium. With seating for more than 73,000 fans, the stadium is actually located in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo. It serves as both the home field and the headquarters for the team. Buffalo is one of the windiest cities in the league, making the stadium a tough one for kickers. The design of the stadium only adds to this effect.

Supporting the team from the sidelines is Billy the Buffalo, the official mascot of the Buffalo Bills. Since 2000, the delightful character has been cheering on his favorite team, and making appearances throughout the community. Billy is active with the youth in the area, making appearances at schools to advocate a good education. He can also be seen at various corporate functions around town.

Billy is joined in his efforts to support the team by the Buffalo Jills. The official cheerleading squad of the Buffalo Bills, the Jills are one of a few cheerleading teams sponsored not by the team, but by local broadcasting stations instead. This group of talented and beautiful women got their beginning as a group of a few young men in wool uniforms. They have progressed to the present day Jills, which includes the dance team that appears at games as well as an ambassador squad to make appearances in the area and help with local efforts at improving their community.

Of course the cheerleaders and mascot are not the only ones active in the lives of their fans. The players and staff of the Bills organization are also active in community initiatives. They participate in blood drives, food drives, and help to raise funding and awareness for causes such as cancer. The team has also partnered with the Blue Cross Blue Shield in the area and the American Heart Association to encourage children to live healthy and stay active for at least sixty minutes a day.

On and off the field, the Buffalo Bills are an amazing team. Their statistics may not match that of other teams, but they put plenty of heart and energy into everything they do, improving the lives of their neighbors while entertaining their fans at the same time. A fan can’t ask for much more than they would find in the Buffalo Bills organization.
